Purpose Two of the Learning Objectives of this course are to examine theories and concepts related to leadership and management and to discuss the importance of leadership to nursing practice. Throughout the course, we have attempted to present numerous theories and viewpoints on the importance of leadership and management in nursing practice. Toward that end, this activity will act as an opportunity to pull some of that information together in a final capstone discussion. According to Barker’s Transformational Nursing Leadership (1992), the presence of a nurse leader in a work environment will be illustrated in the following conditions: Staff turnover rates that are very low Staff whose morale is high, who express a sense of belonging and achievement Staff who understand the goals and purpose of their unit or facility Staff who are mutually supportive, working together toward shared goals Staff who are enthusiastic about, and committed to, care of their patients Staff who articulate a sense of achievement and belonging Satisfied customers: patients, families, and other caregivers Instructions Discuss the impact that retention and staffing can have on quality patient care. Then outline the qualities and skills a nursing leader would need to possess in order to achieve that outcome in today’s demanding, fast-paced nursing environments. Be sure to consider theories of nursing management and leadership in your response. In your response, include evidence to support the points that you make.
